The Greek Partner of the Wetland4Change project, the Goulandris National History Museum – Greek Biotope Wetland Center is organizing the First Local Event with stakeholders of the Lake Kerkini and the catchment of Strymon River the 5 November 2024 in Municipality of Irakleia, hall of Kinimatotheatro, Mpakogianni Square 2.

Why Attend?

This meeting is an opportunity for local stakeholders—including municipality board members, local and regional authorities, management bodies, the local community, local farmers, local ecotouristic businesses, NGOs, wetland experts, and academics—to:

  • Be informed about the Wetland4Change project and its aims, actions and expected results.
  • Learn about the critical role wetlands play in flood regulation and carbon sequestration.
  • Share insights and start the dialogue for conservation and restoration of wetlands as solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation in the context of existing plans i.e Flood Risk Management Plans, Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan.

The objectives of the project are to assess the services that wetlands provide for carbon storage, mitigation of flooding effects, and to increase cooperation with competent authorities and stakeholders, to highlight protection and restoration measures as nature-based solutions.
The event will also gather initial perspectives on how stakeholders view the role of wetlands in addressing climate challenges.
