Wetland4Change seeks to validate and transfer innovative solutions based on wetland conservation and restoration for climate change mitigation and adaptation by enhancing the adoption of science-based knowledge and governance mechanisms. The project strengthens the capacities of wetland managers and policymakers to address the climate crisis at both local and Mediterranean levels.

From January 2024 to June 2026, Wetland4Change operated as a Test Project, developing, testing, and validating two operational solutions: one for assessing the carbon sequestration capacity of wetlands and another for evaluating their contribution to water regulation and flood risk reduction.

Building on the successful validation of these methodologies, the project has now entered its Transfer Phase. From July 2026 to December 2027, Wetland4Change will transfer these proven solutions to new Mediterranean territories through an expanded partnership, enabling new regions to benefit from the project’s knowledge, methodologies, and practical experience while further strengthening the role of wetlands in climate resilience across the Mediterranean.

Following the successful completion of its Test Phase (2024–2026), Wetland4Change has developed and validated two operational wetland-based solutions: one for assessing the carbon sequestration capacity of wetlands and another for evaluating their contribution to water regulation and flood risk reduction. These methodologies were tested and verified across five pilot sites in Bulgaria, Spain, France, Greece, and Italy.

Building on these achievements, Wetland4Change is now implementing its Transfer Phase (2026–2027), transferring the validated solutions to 5 new sites through an expanded partnership. By combining science-based knowledge, capacity building, and cross-border cooperation, the project supports policymakers, wetland managers, and local authorities in adopting practical, nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
